The group was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1965, and originally consisted of sisters Debbie Sledge, Joni Sledge, Kim Sledge, and Kathy Sledge. They were managed by their mother Florez Sledge. Their music crosses genres of R&B, disco, pop, rock, soul, jazz fusion, and gospel.
